The European Education Connectivity Solution (EECS) Project is now in final month of completion
2011-05-04
The European Education Connectivity Solution (EECS) project was researched and developed by a consortium which consists of three European SMEs and three Technology Research Centres. The main aim of the project was to develop a prototype campus card management system to serve the unique needs and requirements of European Higher Education Institutions. The prototype system provides a secure, standardised campus card system to overcome the current barriers to expansion of the campus card market and support academic mobility within Europe.
The concept of developing a European standardised card system was researched among the members of the European Campus Card Association (ECCA). This research clearly identified the need for operability and mobility across the EU. The creation of a standardised campus card system will facilitate secure access to a range of campus services. It will also provide academic mobility by allowing Higher Education institutions to share information using a common identification card that will act as a student’s “electronic key” and will enable access to a student’s records on secure databases.
A standardised campus card will enable more efficient electronic exchange of data amongst H.E. Institutions with the technology of the new millennium. In Europe many Higher Education institutions operate campus card systems in order to facilitate access to services for students, academics and visitors: point of sale, library access, access to classrooms/residences, printing/photocopying, etc. However, these systems operate in isolation on a stand-alone basis, providing no interoperability with other H.E. Institutions card systems due to the lack of system standards.
The main aim of the EECS project is to provide standards, mobility and interoperability throughout the European campuses. The first phase of the EECS project involved several phases of development which was successfully completed in May 2011. The SME's ongoing work is focused on developing the EECS project, bridging the gap between research and commercialisation of the EECS project. A pilot of the EECS solution will be implemented in a number of demonstration sites over the next 12-18 months, with the first being implemented at Waterford Institute of Technology in the first quarter of 2012.
